Find the right chandelier diameter and height for your dining table. Use simple rules to match fixture size to room dimensions and table shape.

Quick answer

For a dining room chandelier, aim for a diameter about half to two-thirds the width of your dining table, and hang it 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop.

Why size matters more than style

A chandelier that is too small looks lost over a large table, while one that is too wide overwhelms the room and can make the space feel cramped. Getting the diameter and hanging height right ensures even light distribution and a balanced visual anchor.

Ceiling height also plays a role. In a room with standard 8-foot ceilings, a fixture that hangs 30–34 inches above the table works well. For taller ceilings, you can raise the chandelier slightly but keep the same clearance from the table.

Table shape and fixture width

Round tables pair naturally with round chandeliers, but rectangular tables can also use a round fixture if the diameter stays within the table width. The Bexley Cloud Glass Six-Light Chandelier spans 48 inches, which fits a table 60–72 inches wide. Its airy, sparse silhouette keeps the visual weight light even at that width.

For a narrow 36-inch-wide table, a fixture around 18–24 inches wide is a better fit. The Hopscotch Chandelier, at 24 inches in diameter, works well for smaller tables or breakfast nooks where a larger fixture would crowd the space.

Decision rules for chandelier size

  • Diameter rule: Add the room length and width in feet. Convert that sum to inches for the ideal chandelier diameter. For example, a 12x14-foot room gives 26 inches. If your table is narrower than the room-based diameter, use the table width rule instead.
  • Table width rule: Choose a chandelier diameter that is half to two-thirds the width of your dining table. For a 48-inch-wide table, look for 24–32 inches.
  • Hanging height: Hang the bottom of the chandelier 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop. For ceilings over 8 feet, raise the fixture by 3 inches for each additional foot of ceiling height. Measure from the tabletop, not the floor.
